The Sims Beat Warcraft for Top PC Seller of '09

June's release of The Sims 3 bested World of Warcraft for the crown of 2009's best selling PC game, according to numbers released today by the NPD Group. Modern Warfare 2, despite a November release, was a strong fifth.
Dragon Age: Origins also saw a November release and also made the top 10, at No. 9. It was one of five games from 2009 to do so in a sector where titles have a longer sales lifespan than on consoles.
Clarification: This analysis covers retail boxed copies only; it does not account for digital sales.
Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion was the second place finisher; the franchise's Battle Chest remained a reliable seller at No. 4, and the five-year-old original version of the game is still No. 6. Sega's Empire: Total War, at No. 10, was the only game not published by Activision or Electronic Arts to make the top 10 in retail boxed sales.
Overall, NPD reported that retail PC game revenues dropped 23 percent in 2009 from their 2008 totals. Michael Gallagher, the president of the Entertainment Software Assocation, countered that 2009 was the highest grossing sales year ever on record for the games industry.
The top 10 PC selling games of 2009 were:
1. The Sims 3
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
3. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
4. World of Warcraft: Battle Chest
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
6. World of Warcraft Blizzard Entertainment
7. The Sims 3: World Adventures Expansion Pack
8. Spore
9. Dragon Age: Origins
10. Empire: Total War

The Billion-Dollar Video Game vs The Billion-Dollar Movie

James Cameron's Avatar has brought in over $1 billion at the box office. Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has done likewise. Let's see how a blockbuster film and a blockbuster video game compare.
As you can see, when it comes to profit - the only number that really matters - the two are relatively close, the key differences being unit price (Avatar costs less but more people have "bought in" and production costs (Avatar's development budget dwarfing that of Modern Warfare 2).
Most interesting, though, is the marketing spend; who would have thought the biggest film since Titanic would have less money spent on its advertising than a video game?

Steam Account Sells for $1,000 on eBay

Here's a story amusing not so much for the games that were sold or their price, but the fact the seller managed to, essentially, resell used Steam games. Like 139 of them, for $1,000. (With free shipping, too!)
Seller dave311freak estimated his collection's value at $2,700 and said he wanted at least $500 for the collection - which includes Grand Theft Auto IV, Modern Warfare 1 and 2, and Borderlands. He ended up getting double that.
Why is dave311freak ditching his PC collection? "As you can probably tell, I spend way too much time buying and playing video games and I am going to try to spend more time with my family and doing other hobbies," he writes. I bet he comes crawling back in two weeks, but good luck anyway.

"This account has absolutely no bans on any of the games, is in good standing with VAC, and any one of the games can be downloaded at any time on any computer with Steam on it," the seller wrote. "I will change all of the information in that account to the winner's email address and issue a password to the winner that he or she can change once they log in. I will also provide user account information for games that require additional credentials (Dragon Age for the DLC, Company of Heroes Account info, etc...)."

And its free!
Little has spilled out regarding BioWare's DLC plans for Mass Effect 2 but yesterday, via Twitter, the studio indicated there will be launch-day DLC and it won't cost anything.
"Addressing rumors: BioWare will not be charging extra for any new Mass Effect 2 content on launch day. More DLC details next week," says the tweet.
Earlier reports had Mass Effect 2 planning a slew of downloadable content, although timing was mentioned for none of it. I suppose that we shall find what the deal is this week. We'd better, the game itself releases in just nine days.

Naruto: Naiteki Kensei is a free total-conversion of Half-Life 1 that offers a new and unique fast-paced gaming experience based on the hit Japanese anime Naruto. Combining aspects of a third-person shooter and an action-based fighter, players will be able to go head-to-head against others online casting clever and powerful jutsus, performing evasive, acrobatic, and free-form movement and melee, and utilizing an array of weapons with multiple functions easily and evenly.
Players are able to transverse through full 3D environments, utilizing various ways of movment such as walking on walls and water or dashing around the streets of a village.
Gameplay consists of three main systems: weapons (#2-0 or mouse scroll), jutsus (holding shift and inputting a combination of WASD keys), and taijutsu or melee (#1 slot).
The weapons included have both primary and secondary functions for each one. Players are able to use kunais as a melee weapon and are able to throw them. Shurikens can be thrown one at a time yet accurately, or multiple stars in a spread-out shotgun manner. Exploding tags can be stuck on surfaces and players, as well as being able to throw one connected to a kunai.
The jutsu system allows players to execute powerful jutsus or techniques. By holding shift, players will then input combo strings of 2-4 using WASD on the keyboard. Correctly inputting a combo will then execute its respective attack.
The taijutsu or melee system is very simple to learn, yet takes much skill to become the best. The primary function allows players to attack consecutively for five hits, then sending your player sliding back. The secondary function allows players to knock their opponents to the air, where various other methods of attack can then be executed, such as throwing a weapon or performing a jutsu, or jumping in the air to execute an air combo.
Naruto: Naiteki Kensei is still in the developmental stages, so it has not yet been released. The first release will consists of Team 7, which includes Hatake Kakashi, Haruno Sakura, Uchiha Sasuke and Uzumaki Naruto. Roughly, each character will have three character-specific jutsus to use at his or her arsenal.
Naruto: Naiteki Kensei is a free online multiplayer game, created as a fan-project for many others to enjoy. It is a total-conversion of Half-Life 1, meaning the game was created based on the Half-Life engine. In order to play, an installed steam client and an installed copy of Half-Life through steam is required.
