PostHeaderIcon Intel GMA HD graphics review deems them excellent for video, mediocre for gaming

Our Intel Arrandale / Clarkdale review bonanza was sprinkled with a few graphics benchmarks, but there was never a concerted effort to break down the specific upgrades on the 45nm GPU that comes as part of the new CPU package. That omission has now been corrected by Bit-tech, who've delved deep into the murky waters of embedded graphics and report that Intel's focus appears to have been firmly on video playback. Noting full bitstreaming, Blu-ray with picture-in-picture, and HDMI 1.3a support, the lads commended the "very smooth" 1080p playback of h.264-encoded video. While their conclusion about gaming was less glowing -- finding that Intel's latest gen only keeps up with older hardware -- they couldn't help but recommend the new processors on account of their feature-rich video playback and energy efficiency.

PostHeaderIcon Golden Globe nominations tap 'Avatar' and 'Up' among others

The 67th annual Golden Globe Award nominations for film and television are fresh off the press, but the rush to dissect their deeper meaning is in full bloom. Despite the nods for the small screen, most media watchers see the selections of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with fewer than 100 voting members, as the Ghosts of Awards Shows Future, primarily the Oscars. There are some surprises, mainly in the best film and acting categories, the biggest perhaps being the tap for James Cameron’s $230 million blockbuster, “Avatar,” for best drama.

The inclusion of a film widely regarded as a crowd-pleasing, special-effects-driven popcorn flick extravaganza is a startling sign that the effort is being taken seriously – for a good reason, says Matthew Belloni, managing editor of the trade publication, The Hollywood Reporter. “The Globes have a tradition of choosing movies that will move the industry forward,” he says, adding that the technological achievement in depicting a 3-D, deep-space environment is widely seen as setting new cinematic standards. On the downside, the absence of a nod for Clint Eastwood’s Nelson Mandela tribute, “Invictus,” was particularly surprising, given both the acting and directing nods to the film received for Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood, respectively. Other unexpected moments include the double nods for Sandra Bullock, one for drama (“The Blind Side”) and one for comedy (“The Proposal”).

But, says Paul Schneider, film and TV department chairman at Boston University, by and large these choices can be seen as a rough road map for the motion picture Academy statuettes, whose own list doesn’t come out till January.

“I would expect many of the nominations, especially in the acting area to overlap with the Oscars,” he writes in an e-mail, pointing out that this year, for the first time, the Motion Picture Academy has expanded the list of contenders for best film to 10 candidates, up from five in previous years. He adds that while award shows have proliferated, the Golden Globes have gradually moved from being dismissed as a minor group of celebrity-happy junketeers, in the past five years or so, to being seen as a meaningful barometer of industry achievement.

The Globe nominations are an eclectic mix this year, says executive producer of Yahoo! Movies, Sean Phillips, carrying on their own tradition of tapping as many sides of the entertainment landscape as possible. For instance, he points out, the other deep-space hit of 2009, “Star Trek,” was a possibility for the list. “But,” he points out, “there’s room for only one big high-tech space adventure and that of course, went to ‘Avatar.’” He sees this inclusiveness as a virtue, going further to suggest the very awards shows that seem to draw increasing criticism as they proliferate across the TV landscape, as a useful distraction – particularly in hard times. “Knock them if you like, but I don’t see anything wrong in honoring the best of human art and craft in an industry that for many, can take years to produce a single work. Look at James Cameron,” he adds, whose work on “Avatar” began nearly 15 years ago.

PostHeaderIcon 2011 BMW 3-Series: What Big Eyes You Have

After all the hype here's the 2011 BMW 3-Series, featuring the same wide-eyed treatment seen on the 2011 5-Series and sporting the new N55 turbo inline-six pumping out 300 HP and 300 lb-ft of torque.

You might be thinking to yourself this is the same overall power and displacement as the previous inline-six found in the 335i. You're right. Look deeper and the only significant difference on paper is the torque curve is slightly better with peak twist kicking in at 1200 RPM, thanks in part to the addition of the Bimmer version of variable valve timing/control. The real difference? BMW has dropped the twin-turbo setup in favor of a single, twin-scroll turbo.

No talk yet of the more exciting IS model yet so we hope you enjoy the new snout and other minor creases added to the coupe to give it cleaner, sleeker proportions.

PostHeaderIcon The Sims Beat Warcraft for Top PC Seller of '09

June's release of The Sims 3 bested World of Warcraft for the crown of 2009's best selling PC game, according to numbers released today by the NPD Group. Modern Warfare 2, despite a November release, was a strong fifth.
Dragon Age: Origins also saw a November release and also made the top 10, at No. 9. It was one of five games from 2009 to do so in a sector where titles have a longer sales lifespan than on consoles.

Clarification: This analysis covers retail boxed copies only; it does not account for digital sales.

Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion was the second place finisher; the franchise's Battle Chest remained a reliable seller at No. 4, and the five-year-old original version of the game is still No. 6. Sega's Empire: Total War, at No. 10, was the only game not published by Activision or Electronic Arts to make the top 10 in retail boxed sales.

Overall, NPD reported that retail PC game revenues dropped 23 percent in 2009 from their 2008 totals. Michael Gallagher, the president of the Entertainment Software Assocation, countered that 2009 was the highest grossing sales year ever on record for the games industry.

The top 10 PC selling games of 2009 were:
1. The Sims 3
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
3. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
4. World of Warcraft: Battle Chest
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
6. World of Warcraft Blizzard Entertainment
7. The Sims 3: World Adventures Expansion Pack
8. Spore
9. Dragon Age: Origins
10. Empire: Total War

PostHeaderIcon The Billion-Dollar Video Game vs The Billion-Dollar Movie

James Cameron's Avatar has brought in over $1 billion at the box office. Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has done likewise. Let's see how a blockbuster film and a blockbuster video game compare.
As you can see, when it comes to profit - the only number that really matters - the two are relatively close, the key differences being unit price (Avatar costs less but more people have "bought in" and production costs (Avatar's development budget dwarfing that of Modern Warfare 2).
Most interesting, though, is the marketing spend; who would have thought the biggest film since Titanic would have less money spent on its advertising than a video game?

PostHeaderIcon Steam Account Sells for $1,000 on eBay

Here's a story amusing not so much for the games that were sold or their price, but the fact the seller managed to, essentially, resell used Steam games. Like 139 of them, for $1,000. (With free shipping, too!)

Seller dave311freak estimated his collection's value at $2,700 and said he wanted at least $500 for the collection - which includes Grand Theft Auto IV, Modern Warfare 1 and 2, and Borderlands. He ended up getting double that.
"This account has absolutely no bans on any of the games, is in good standing with VAC, and any one of the games can be downloaded at any time on any computer with Steam on it," the seller wrote. "I will change all of the information in that account to the winner's email address and issue a password to the winner that he or she can change once they log in. I will also provide user account information for games that require additional credentials (Dragon Age for the DLC, Company of Heroes Account info, etc...)."

Why is dave311freak ditching his PC collection? "As you can probably tell, I spend way too much time buying and playing video games and I am going to try to spend more time with my family and doing other hobbies," he writes. I bet he comes crawling back in two weeks, but good luck anyway.

PostHeaderIcon BioWare: Mass Effect 2 Will Have Launch DLC

And its free!

Little has spilled out regarding BioWare's DLC plans for Mass Effect 2 but yesterday, via Twitter, the studio indicated there will be launch-day DLC and it won't cost anything.

"Addressing rumors: BioWare will not be charging extra for any new Mass Effect 2 content on launch day. More DLC details next week," says the tweet.

Earlier reports had Mass Effect 2 planning a slew of downloadable content, although timing was mentioned for none of it. I suppose that we shall find what the deal is this week. We'd better, the game itself releases in just nine days.

PostHeaderIcon Review MSI Wind U135 Netbook

"The best design offers ultimate ease and joy." - is what MSI's Chief Industrial Designer is said to have stated in connection with the Wind U135. Well, we can basically verify the simplicity of handling the netbook, but joy on design is an issue as such. Our black prototype's great tendency to smudge smothers the initial exhilaration very quickly, in our opinion. Furthermore, there is glare type display that principally shows respectable assessment data, but is at a disadvantage in adverse light conditions in comparison to displays with a matt surface.

It's necessary to remark the good case stability as well as the very pleasant to use keyboard.

You get the usual Wind fare that correlates to the positioning in the netbook sector in terms of connectivity. This also applies to the netbooks performance, despite brand new Intel hardware. The Intel N450 CPU with the GMA 3150 graphic chip places itself on the same level as its predecessors (N280/GMA950) but has the advantage of a significantly lower power consumption.

The Wind U135 reaches up to 7 hours in the battery test. This is a feasible rate but still lags far behind the identically equipped Asus Eee 1005p. The netbook's soundscape, in particular the always present fan, could be an issue for sensitive ears. The price will likely also be decisive for the Wind U135's success, which is estimated at less than 300 euro, according to first information. A serious competitor, the Asus Eee 1005p, with a street price on about the same level is already being sold.

PostHeaderIcon Tommy Kaira presents Nissan GT-R "Silver Wolf" edition

Japanese tuning enthusiasts (and racing sim fanatics everywhere) have come to know Tommy Kaira as one of the best in the business. The Japanese outfit works its magic on Skylines, Imprezas and more, and has now released a tuning package for the current Nissan GT-R.

Called the Silver Wolf, this GT-R sees its engine left intact, but gets treated to a full body kit, plus new rolling stock, brakes, exhaust and suspension components. The carbon fiber widebody package gives Godzilla a serious attitude adjustment, while the functional components – if Tommy Kaira's previous offerings are anything to go by – promise to squeeze that extra bit of performance out of this Japanese icon. Click the thumbnails below for a closer look.

PostHeaderIcon Nintendo DS2 to be announced this year, released not too long after?

Nintendo has already been talking up what a Nintendo DS successor might look like, so it wouldn't come as too much of a shock if we saw the device in the near term. That's what EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich believes, anyway. He has a research note out saying that Nintendo will be releasing a new handheld in the next 15 months, and make the announcement within the next eight months. The reasons are numerous, including the need to bone up on online distribution, rampant piracy, and just the regular march of technology that Nintendo is never unaware of -- just ask the routinely trounced handheld competition. Unfortunately, there's nothing "solid" in this report as far as we can tell, so we'll have to wait for some "unnamed sources" or our cousin's friend's dad's barber to weigh in and tell us how it really is.

PostHeaderIcon Apple Tablet In 2010??

A source familiar with Apple’s product plans says that the company plans to introduce a tablet-based device in early 2010. This is consistent with the report from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster this morning suggesting precisely the same thing. Here’s the body of Munster’s note:

Signs Pointing To A New Mobile Device. Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise.

Specifically, we expect this to result in a larger (7”-10”) touchscreen tablet that will launch in 1H CY10. Additionally, Apple’s consistent message that it refuses to launch a “cheap” portable netbook, and its desire to differentiate itself in a maturing market before it’s too late (similar to the timing of iPod and iPhone), plus its gradual addition of multi-touch technology to all of its core products (iPhones, iPods and Macs) leads us to conclude this product will be a touchscreen tablet (not a netbook).

No Netbook On The Horizon; Tablet A CY10 Event. We expect Apple to fill the gap between the iPod touch and the MacBook with a new tablet device (not a netbook) priced at about $500-$700. Apple will likely leverage its multi-touch patents to differentiate its product from the typical netbook. We are anticipating a new category of Apple products with an operating system more robust than the iPhone’s but optimized for multi-touch, unlike Mac OS X. The device’s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple’s mobile OS and run App Store apps, or it could be a modified version of Mac OS X. We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10.

Apple’s Timing In Entering New Markets. Apple launched the first iPod in Oct-01, three years after the first portable MP3 player was on the market. Likewise, the iPhone debuted in Jun-07, five years after the first BlackBerry with email and mobile phone capabilities. With both products, Apple designed devices that were differentiated enough to gain significant market share despite its later entrance into the markets. We believe Apple is observing the netbook market in a similar way, and will eventually enter with a tablet, a premium mobile computing device.

Munster’s analysis sounds extremely convincing to me. Despite rumors of an impending launch of lower-end mid-sized devices, Apple is still doing well enough in its businesses—both in terms of market share, and certainly from a margin point of view—that it is likely loath to simply give in to the pressure to throw some cheap netbook knock-off out on the market. If current economics conditions are anywhere near as bad as they are going to get, it seems Apple is powering through just fine. Why take the risk of cannibalizing more profitable product lines in the future, with a product that Steve & Co. wouldn’t be “proud of,” as they say whenever asked about netbooks by Wall Street analysts.

But taking the time to craft yet another consumer category-making product makes total sense. Until now, all the talk of mid-sized devices that are smaller than a laptop and larger than a cellphone strike me as wishful thinking by vendors. But who really needs one, and for what? I know I don’t. But if Apple comes out with a slick multi-touch-equipped device of that size, able to run thousands of Apps tuned for the form factor (not to mention play movies, or help you create your own), that’s a different story. And probably a very profitable one.
